Free Church

Ministers of the Free Church of Scotland are listed, along with ministers of other denominations, in the General Index of Scottish Presbyterian ministers and many Free Church ministers, again, with others, appear in the family Trees. But this section is devoted exclusively to Free Church ministers. It contains the following material:

William Ewing’s Annals of the Free Church of Scotland, 1843-1900, 2 volumes: A full account of the information that this source provides and how to access it is given here: Ewing’s Annals.

Thomas Brown’s Annals of the Disruption: This is an account of the Disruption written decades after the event from a committed perspective. Its usefulness for our purpose is that, as its extended title tells us, it contains “extracts from the narratives of ministers who left the Scottish establishment in 1843”. It therefore contains personal stories of ministers and their families, which are then linked to the ministers in Ewing’s Annals.A full account of the information that this source provides and how to access it is given here: Brown’s Annals.

Biographies of ministers and others who played a significant part in the Free Church appeared in monthly publications from time to time; and there a number of books about “Disruption Worthies”. This section contains a number of such biographies from various sources. These accounts are generally devotional or even hagiographical in nature and the family researcher may well appreciate them more than the student of church history. A full account of the information that this source provides and how to access it is given here: Biographies

Image Gallery: Some of the biographies presented here included images of the person being dealt with. These appear along with the biography – but some of these have been brought together in an Image Gallery. Access to these images can be got by clicking Image Gallery

Obituaries post-1900: These are obituaries of ministers who died after died and who remained associated with the Free Church after the union of 1900 or who entered the Free Church ministry after that date. For a full account of the information that this source provides and for an index of the men concerned, see Obituaries post-1900

Some Congregational Histories The Monthly Record of the Free Church of Scotland published accounts of selected congregations from time to time. These have been brought together on this web-site. A full account of the information that this source provides and how to access it is given here: Some Congregational Histories.
