1. John Mackay of Kirtomy, Sutherland, (c.1668-1732) was the son of James Mackay of Kirtomy and Jane Fraser, daughter of Sir James Fraser of Brea and sister of James Fraser of Brea, minister in Culross, Fife: FES, Vol.5, p.15.
1.1. Catherine Mackay (c.1693-1724) was the daughter of John Mackay of Kirtomy. She married John Mackay (1680-1753), the son of Captain William Mackay of Borley and Elizabeth Corbet. He was minister of Lairg, Sutherland: FES, Vol.7, p.93.
1.1.1. Thomas Mackay (1717-1803) was the son of John Mackay, minister of Lairg. He too was minister of Lairg: FES, Vol.7, p.93.
1.1.1.1. Harriet Mackay (1766-1848) was the daughter of Thomas Mackay, minister of Lairg. She married George Gordon, minister of Loth, Sutherland: FES, Vol.7, p.95. He was the son of Charles Gordon and Catherine Sage, who was the daughter of Aeneas Sage – see below.
1.1.1.1.1. Charles Gordon (1799-1873) was the son of George Gordon, minister of Loth. He was minister of Assynt. He became a Free Church minister.
1.1.1.1.1.1. Isabella Margaret Gordon (1834-1912) was the daughter of Charles Gordon, minister of Assynt. She married Neil Macleod, a Free Church minister.
1.1.1.1.1.2. Hugh William Gordon (1843-1873) was the son of Charles Gordon, minister of Assynt. He was minister in Bolton Presbyterian Church, Lancashire, England: FES, Vol.7, p.486.
1.1.2. Elizabeth Mackay (1710-1780) was the daughter of John Mackay, minister of Lairg. She married Aeneas Sage, minister of Lochcarron, Ross and Cromarty: FES, Vol.7, p.160.
1.1.2.1. Katharine Sage (1729-?) was the daughter of Aeneas Sage, minister of Lochcarron. She married Charles Gordon whose brother Adam Gordon was the father of George Gordon, minister of Loth, who married his cousin, Harriet Mackay – see above.
1.1.2.2. Mary Sage (1734-?) was the daughter of Aeneas Sage, minister of Lochcarron. She married Donald Kennedy of Kishorn, Applecross, Ross and Cromarty.
1.1.2.2.1. Angus Kennedy (1767-1855) was the son of Donald Kennedy of Kishorn. He was minister of Dornoch, Sutherland. He became a Free Church minister. He married Isabella Rainy, daughter of George Rainy, minister of Creich, Sutherland: FES, Vol.7, p.82. For the Rainy family connections, see the Bayne Tree.
1.1.2.2.1.1. Georgiana Robertson Kennedy (1807-1874) was the daughter of Angus Kennedy, minister of Dornoch. She married John Mackenzie, minister of Carnoch, Ross and Cromarty. He became a Free Church minister.
1.1.2.2.1.1.1. Winewood Ann Mackenzie (1838-1913) was the daughter of John Mackenzie, minister of Carnoch. She married Murdo(ch) MacDonald, Free Church minister in Elgin, Moray.
1.1.2.2.1.1.1.1. Aeneas Sage Duncan MacDonald (1880-1946) was a son of Murdoch MacDonald, Elgin. He was a Presbyterian minister in Murrumbeena, Victoria.
1.1.2.2.1.1.2. Isabella Mackenzie was the daughter of John Mackenzie, minister of Carnoch. She married William Mackenzie, a minister in Bowenfels, New South Wales, whose brother Colin Mackenzie, had also been minister there.
1.1.2.2.1.2. George Rainy Kennedy (1812-1899) was the son of Angus Kennedy, minister of Dornoch. He became a Free Church minister.
1.1.2.2.1.2.1. Harry Angus Alexander Kennedy (1866-1934) was the son of George Rainy Kennedy, Free Church minister. He too was a Free Church minister. He married Elizabeth Gordon, the sister of Francis Gordon, a Free Church minister – and another one with a web of ministerial connections. 1.1.2.3. Alexander Sage (1753-1824) was the son of Aeneas Sage, minister of Lochcarron. He was minister of Kildonan, Sutherland: FES, Vol.7, p.90. He married Isabella Fraser. She was the daughter of Donald Fraser, minister of Urquhart, Ross and Cromarty. For his family, see the McBean Fraser Tree.
1.1.2.3.1. Elizabeth Sage (1785-1838) was the daughter of Alexander Sage, minister of Kildonan. She married Finlay Cook. He was minister in Reay, Caithness, and became a Free Church minister. He was brother of Archibald Cook, minister of the North Church, Inverness, who became a Free Church minister. Archibald Cook’s daughter, Christina Cook, married John Ross, a Free Church minister.
1.1.2.3.1.1. Alexander Cook (1823-1861) was the son of Finlay Cook, minister in Reay. He was a Free Church minister. He married his cousin, Margaret Cook, daughter of Archibald Cook, minister of the North Church, Inverness.
1.1.2.3.2. Jane Sage (1787-1852) was the daughter of Alexander Sage, minister of Kildonan. She married William Forbes, minister of Tarbat, Ross and Cromarty: FES, Vol.7, p.75.
1.1.2.3.3. Donald Sage (1789-1869) was the son of Alexander Sage, minister of Kildonan. He was minister of Resolis, Ross and Cromarty. He became a Free Church minister. He married, as his second wife, Elizabeth Mackintosh. She was the daughter of William Mackintosh, minister in Thurso, Caithness (FES, Vol.7, p.137), and Christian Sutherland, daughter of William Sutherland, minister in Wick, Caithness (FES, Vol.7, p.142). 1.1.2.3.3.1. Christian Sutherland Sage (1827-1904) was the daughter of Donald Sage, by his first wife. She married William Murray Mackay, a Free Church minister.
1.1.2.3.3.1.1. William Murray Macintosh Mackay (1865-1947) was the son of William Murray Mackay. He was a Free Church minister.
1.1.2.3.3.2. Donald Fraser Sage (1840-1890) was the son of Donald Sage, minister in Resolis. He was a Free Church minister. He married Margaret Ann Thomson, the daughter of Alexander Thomson, a Free Church minister, whose brother, Robert Thomson, was also a Free Church minister. Two brothers of Margaret Ann Thomson married daughters of Duncan Turner, a Free Church minister: Robert Thomson married Agnes Catherine Turner, and Alexander Thomson married Mary Jane Mackean Turner.
1.1.2.3.3.3. Christina Camilla Jane Sage (1846-1923) was the daughter of Donald Sage, minister in Resolis. She married Donald Sutherland, a Free Church minister.
1.1.2.3.3.2.1. William Sinclair Sutherland (1877-1945) was the son of Donald Sutherland, Free Church minister. He was a minister of the United Free Church: FUFC, p.544.
1.1.3. Barbara Mackay (c.1714-1792) was the daughter of John Mackay, minister of Lairg. She married George Munro, minister of Farr, Sutherland: FES, Vol.7, p.107. FES says he was grand-son of George Squair, minister of Eddrachillis, but there is no such person mentioned in FES. For an explanation of who he was, see here.
1.2. Beatrix Mackay was the daughter of John Mackay of Kirtomy. This person is not mentioned in other sources, but in FES, Vol.7, p.125 Andrew Sutherland appears as minister in Latheron, Caithness, and he married “Beatrix, daughter of John Mackay of Kirtomy” and a marriage contract reference is given.
1.3. Elizabeth Mackay (c.1712-?) was the daughter of John Mackay of Kirtomy. Some sources say that she married Alexander Sutherland minister of Halkirk. But FES knows no such person, but shows her married to John Sutherland, minister of Halkirk, as his second wife: FES, Vol.7, p.122.
1.4. Jane Mackay (c.1715-1762) was the daughter of John Mackay of Kirtomy. She married William Scobie, minister in Assynt, Sutherland: FES, Vol.7, p.78.
1.4.1. John Scobie (1733-1805) was the son of William Scobie, minister in Assynt.
1.4.1.1. Janet Scobie (c.1776-?) was the daughter of John Scobie. She married John Mackenzie.
1.4.1.1.1. Robert Mackenzie (1794-1880) was the son of John Mackenzie.
1.4.1.1.1.1. Jessie Scobie Mackenzie (1826-1900) was the daughter of Robert Mackenzie. She married Donald Fraser, Free Church minister in Cromdale.
1.4.1.2. Kenneth Scobie (c.1776-1831) was the son of John Scobie.
1.4.1.2.1. Mary Anne Scobie (1806-1908) was the daughter of Kenneth Scobie. She married Roderick Mackenzie.
1.4.1.2.1.1. Mackay John Scobie Mackenzie (1845-1901) was the son of Roderick Mackenzie.
1.4.1.2.1.1.1. Alexander Kenneth Scobie Mackenzie (1877-1946) was the son of Mackay John Scobie Mackenzie. He married Evangeline Mary Gualter, daughter of William Henry Gualter, a Free Church minister.
1.4.2. James Scobie (1735-1764) was the son of William Scobie, minister in Assynt. He was minister of Wick, Caithness: FES, Vol.7, p.142.
1.5. Janet Mackay was the daughter of John Mackay of Kirotmy. She married Robert Mackay, “The Tutor”.

1.5.1.1. Alexandrina Mackay was the daughter of George Mackay of Bighouse. She married Gabriel Reed of Gordonbush.
1.5.1.1.1. Louisa Reed was the daughter of Gabriel Reed of Gordonbush. She married George Mackay, minister of Clyne, Sutherland. He became a Free Church minister. This man married as his second wife, Catherine Fraser, the daughter of Thomas Fraser, minister in Inverness: FES, Vol.6, p.458.
1.5.1.1.2. Dorothy Reed was the daughter of Gabriel Reed of Gordonbush. She married John Murray Free Church minister in Clyne.
1.5.1.2. Margaret Carr Mackay was the daughter of George Mackay of Bighouse. She married Admiral Matthew James Popplewell.
1.5.1.2.1. Sarah Elizabeth Popplewell was the daughter of Matthew James Popplewell. She married Rev. William Boys Johnstone. In 1881 he was a “clerk in holy orders” in Boston, Lincolnshire, England.
1.5.2. Elizabeth Mackay was the daughter of Robert Mackay, “The Tutor”. She married Robert Gordon, Achness, Sutherland.
1.5.2.1. Jean Gordon (-1816) was the daughter of Robert Gordon, Achness. She married Duncan McGillivray. He became a Free Church minister.
1.5.2.1.1. Angus Mackintosh McGillivray was the son of Duncan McGillivray, Free Church minister. He became a Free Church minister. He married Emma Mackenzie Christie, whose maternal grand-father was James Burn, minister in Forgan, Fife: FES, Vol.5, p.204.
1.5.2.1.2. Alexander Gordon McGillivray was the son of Duncan McGillivray, Free Church minister. He became a Free Church minister. He married Elizabeth Robina Anderson Watson. She was the daughter of Charles Watson, Sr., and his wife Isabella Boog. She was therefore the sister of Charles Watson, Jr., and of Robert Boog Watson – all Free Church ministers.
Helen Brodie Cowan Watson, the daughter of Robert Boog Watson, married William Burney Bannerman, the son of James Bannerman, and the brother of David Douglas Bannerman, both Free Church ministers.
Jane Elizabeth Boog, the sister of Isabella Boog, married Matthew Leishman, parish minister of Govan; and they had family including Thomas Leishman, minister of Linton, Roxburghshire, and Isabella Agatha Leishman who married David Williamson Runciman, minister of Leslie, Fife. Thomas Leishman married his cousin Christina Balmanno Fleming and had family including James Fleming Leishman, also minister in Linton, and Jane Elizabeth Fleming Leishman, who married Charles James Cowan, minister of Morebattle, Roxburghshire (who was the son of Samuel Cowan, minister of Kelton, Kirkcudbrightshire; the grandson of Thomas Campbell, minister of Ancrum; the great grandson of John Hunter, minister of Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire; the nephew of Archibald Blair Campbell, minister of Kilwinning, Ayrshire, and of James Robb Grant, minister of Buittle, Kirkcudbrightshire; the brother-in-law of Andrew Edgar, minister of Mauchline).
David Williamson Runciman was the son of David Runciman, minister of St Andrew’s, Glasgow; he and his wife (Isabella Agatha Leishman) had family including Janet Aitchson Runciman who married Thomas Scott, minister of Laurencekirk and son of Thomas Scott, United Presbyterian minister of Stonehaven; and Elizabeth Anderson Runciman, who married William George Andrews, minister of St Bride’s, Edinburgh.
