Some Congregational Histories

Some Congregational Histories

Under this title, a good number of articles appeared in the Free Church Monthly Record at different times and from the pen of different writers. These varied considerably in length but all gave a short account of Free Church congregations and their ministers. A few other articles of a similar nature appeared from time to time, though not under the heading of “Some Congregational Histories”. These were all congregations in the Free Church after the Union of 1900. These articles are all brought together here. The information which Ewing’s Annals of the Free Church of Scotland provide in regard to congregations is very limited and these articles go a little way towards filling out the picture of these congregations, though most of them are close to 100 years old and do not bring the account of these congregations up to date.

Some Congregational Histories were written by three men:

“W. R. B.”, that is, Walter Rounsfell Brown, a leading laymen, associated mainly with Milton congregation, Glasgow. On retiral from his legal practice he moved to Edinburgh and became General Treasurer of the Church, working from the Free Church Offices there.

Rev. Ewen MacRury, minister at the time he was writing these articles in Shiskine, Isle of Arran, and then Glenurquhart, Inverness-shire.

Rev. Donald MacKinnon, minister at the time of writing these articles in Portree, Isle of Skye.

There doesn’t seem to have been any overall plan in their production. There was overlap by the main participants: Rounsfell Brown wrote articles from 1927 to 1936; Ewen MacRury from 30 to 34; and Donald MacKinnon from 1933 to 1940.
