A.1.1. Ann Cowan (1772-1837) was the daughter of Francis Cowan, Gladsmuir. She married, as his second wife, John Thomson, minister of New Greyfriars, Edinburgh: FES, Vol.1, p.34.
A.1.1.1. William Aird Thomson (1773-1863) was the son of John Thomson,New Greyfriars, by his first wife. He was a Free Church minister.

A.1.1.1.1.1. Isabella Thomson (1833-1909) was the daughter of John William Thomson, minister. She married James Watson Geddie, a Free Church minister.

A.1.1.1.1.1.2. Mary Jane Moncreiff Geddie (1867-1895) was the daughter of James Watson Geddie, minister. She married Alexander Gordon Robertson Ingram. He was: the son of William Ingram; the grandson of John Robertson; the nephew of Alexina Robertson, who married Murdoch Mackay; and the brother of Jessie Ann Ingram, who married Robert Niven; of Mary Ingram, who married Robert Gordon; and of Helen Gordon Ingram, who married Robert Scott. All these men were Free Church ministers.
In addition, Murdoch Mackay was brother of Alexander Mackay, a Free Church minister, and father of Alexander Robertson Mackay, a minister of the United Free Church, and of James Cunningham Mackay, minister of Kirkmichael, Perthshire: FES, Vol.4, p.165, who married Isabel Small, daughter of John Small, a Free Church missionary.
A.1.1.1.1.2. Margaret Thomson (1836-1886) was the daughter of John William Thomson, minister. She married Alexander Murray McCallum, a Free Church minister.
A.1.1.1.1.3. Janet Moncrieff Thomson (1841-1919) was the daughter of John William Thomson, minister. She married Andrew Melville, a Free Church, minister. His father was Alexander Melville, minister of Falkirk, Stirlingshire: FES, Vol.1, p.208; his grand-father was Andrew Melville, a Free Church minister; and his mother was Catherine MacFarlan, a daughter of Patrick McFarlan and sister of John McFarlan, Free Church ministers.
A.1.1.1.2. Helen Mary Thomson (1808-1878) was the daughter of William Aird Thomson, minister. She married as her second husband, Patrick Campbell Macdougall, Professor of Moral Philosophy in University of Edinburgh and a Free Church minister. His father was Hugh MacDougall, minister of Killin, Perthshire: FES, Vol.4, p.185; his maternal grand-father, Patrick Campbell, was minister of Kilninver, Argyll: FES, Vol.4, p.97; and his brother, James Ewen MacDougall, was minister in Ladyloan, Arbroath, Angus: FES, Vol.5, p.418.
A.1.1.1.3. Margaret Thomson (1809) was the daughter of William Aird Thomson, minister. She married John Reid Omond, a Free Church minister. His niece, Mary Omond, married George Webster Thomson – see above A.1.1.1.1.1.1. David Watson Geddie.

A.1.1.2. Andrew Mitchell Thomson (1778-1831) was the son of John Thomson, New Greyfriars, by his first wife. He was minister of St George’s, Edinburgh: FES, Vol.1, p.105.
A.1.1.2.1. Andrew Thomson (1815-1859) was the son of Andrew Mitchell Thomson, minister of St George’s, Edinburgh. He was a Free Church minister. A.1.1.3. John Thomson (1803-1893) was the son of John Thomson, New Greyfriars, by his second wife. He was a Free Church minister. He married (1) Beatrice Dempster, daughter of John Dempster, a Free Church minister, whose sister, Mary Dempster, married John Ferguson, another Free Church minister; and (2) Jane Guthrie, daughter of Alexander Guthrie, M.D., Brechin, Angus, and niece of Thomas Guthrie a Free Church minister. B.1.2.1.1. John Warden (1740-1788) was the son of John Warden, Canongate. He was also minister there: FES, Vol.1, p.29. He changed his name to McFarlan – on inheriting from his mother’s family.

B.1.2.1.1.2. Patrick McFarlan (1781-1849) was the son of John Warden or McFarlan, Canongate. He was a Free Church minister. He married Catherine Clason. She was the sister of Patrick Clason and James Clason, both Free Church ministers; and the daughter of Robert Clason, minister of Dalziel, Lanarkshire: FES, Vol.3, p.249. Her brother, James Clason, married Janet Harvie, the daughter of John Harvie, minister of Innerwick, East Lothian: FES, Vol.1, p.411, and they had a daughter Rebecca Clason who married Adam Thorburn, a Free Church minister.
