Biographies
Free Church Ministers and Others
Here we have a number of biographies gathered together from various sources for the convenience of researchers. These are mainly the stories of ministers of the Free Church of Scotland but they also include the accounts of other men and women associated with the Free Church. They are arranged alphabetically by surname in four documents, and in each document there is an Index of the people dealt with. Click to access.
These biographies are drawn from four main sources:
Disruption Worthies of the Highlands: Another Memorial of 1843, Edinburgh, John Greig and Son, 1877
Our Church Fathers: being Biographical Sketches of Disruption Fathers in and around the Presbytery of Elgin, Elgin, James Watson, 1899
Occasional articles in The Monthly Record of the Free Church of Scotland
Disruption Worthies originally appeared on its own on this website; now these biographies have been incorporated into this more general collection.
There are links to this collection from Ewing’s list of Free Church ministers but there are no such links to those who aren’t Free Church ministers. The result of that is that such biographies might easily be overlooked. To do something to rescue these people from obscurity, here is a list of the men and women whose biographies appear here though they were not ministers:
Breadalbane, The Marquis of
Brewster, Sir David
Buchan of Kelloe, George
Campbell of Monzie, Alexander
Campbell, William
Collins, William
Crawford, James
Craufurd, William Howieson
Crichton, David Maitland Makgill
Dalhousie, The Earl of
Dunlop, Alexander Murray
Gordon, Elizabeth, Duchess of
Greig, Major Robert
